Watchparty — Privacy Policy

Watchparty is a browser extension that lets you synchronize video playback (play, pause, seek) and chat with friends while each of you watches a streaming service — Netflix, Hotstar, or Prime Video — on your own, separately paid account. This policy explains what data the extension handles.

What data is sent, and where

When you join a room, the extension sends the following to our sync server over a WebSocket connection:

• The display name you enter (not your account name or email — just a nickname you choose)
• The room code you're joining
• Playback events (play/pause/seek timestamps) so other room members' players can follow along
• Chat messages you type in the extension's panel
• Emoji reactions you send

This data is relayed live to the other members currently in the same room, so they can stay in sync and see your chat/reactions. It is not written to a database, logged permanently, sold, or shared with any third party.

What the extension does NOT do

• It does not access, read, or transmit your Netflix/Hotstar/Prime Video login, account details, or viewing history.
• It does not capture, record, or re-stream video/audio from the page.
• It does not track you across other websites.
• It does not use analytics, ad trackers, or fingerprinting.

Local storage

The extension uses your browser's local extension storage (chrome.storage.local) to remember the last room code and display name you used, purely for convenience on your own device. This never leaves your browser except as described above when you actively join a room.

Data retention

The sync server holds room membership and relays messages only while a room is active in memory. When everyone leaves a room, its state is discarded. No chat or playback history is stored after a session ends.
